COBALT FLUX
The 2026 scene · Get up to speed

You're not alone out here.

There's a whole living community around this — free games, endless community-made songs, online leaderboards, tournaments, and a DIY hardware scene that keeps getting wilder. Here's the lay of the land in 2026 and how to jump in.

The landscape

Two worlds — you live in the free one

The scene splits into a free side where basically everyone is, and a pricey commercial side. With a metal pad + PC, the free side is your whole world.

Free · where everyone is

ITGmania

The StepMania 5.1 fork — v1.2.1 (Mar 2026). Ships with the Simply Love theme + built-in GrooveStats online leaderboards. Thousands of free songs, every tournament, $0 if you have a pad. This is what you run.

Commercial · the appliance

StepManiaX (SMX)

Step Revolution's closed 5-panel platform. Polished arcade-in-a-box, but the pad alone is ~$1,895 and cabinets run $11k–14k — and it only plays its own 500+ licensed songs. Cool, but not a Cobalt Flux path.

Official titles, for context: DDR World rules the arcades; DDR's PC release is locked behind a Japanese account + sub + per-play tickets (the West ignores it). Pump It Up RISE just hit Steam (Mar 2026, $45) but it's keyboard-first — skip it for the pad. Want PIU on your pad? Add Project OutFox next to ITGmania (multi-mode: DDR, PIU, ParaPara in one).

Get in & have fun

Six moves from "working pad" to "playing with the whole community."

  1. Install ITGmania 1.2.1

Free, comes with Simply Love. See the Rig guide for setup + latency tuning. itgmania.com

  2. Remap your pad

In Options, make all four arrows read cleanly on both feet.

  3. Set a Speed Mod

In Simply Love, so the arrows scroll at a readable pace. This is the single biggest "oh, now I can play" change — do it first.

  4. Connect GrooveStats

Make a free account, paste the API key in → your scores + a live in-game leaderboard light up automatically. groovestats.com

  5. Grab songs & play easy

Start with Club Fantastic (bundled) or a beginner pack at blocks 4–8. Chase the letter grade, not survival. Full song how-to in the Play guide.

  6. Join the Discord

Say hi in the ITC newcomer channel; when you can clear 9s, grab the ITL 2026 pack — curated, graded, the friendliest door in. discord.gg/5TckmzDDkH

Reading the difficulty scale

Charts use the ITG meter (block) rating. It runs harder than old DDR numbers — a "10" is no joke.

The culture

Customs are the game

Community-made charts aren't a side mode — they're the whole thing. The official arcade tracklist is a tiny seed; everything you'll play is user-made and free. Two cultures split the scene:

Endurance

🫀 Stamina

Long, near-unbroken 16th-note streams — the goal is surviving the hardest/longest thing. Files run past block 20 into the high 20s/30s. Its own world: Stamina RPG, East Coast Stamina.

Precision

🧠 Tech

Gnarly footwork — crossovers, brackets, footswitches, jacks. The skill is reading and hitting it cleanly, not cardio. ITL is the flagship tech event.

The DIY hardware scene

The big 2026 shift: FSR sensors. Your Cobalt Flux is a rigid contact pad — an FSR reads how hard you press (analog), so you tune each panel's sensitivity in software and never crack it open again. It's the most common enthusiast upgrade, and it works on your pad.

⬢ Your obvious upgrade path

Slide FSRs under your Cobalt Flux panels with teejusb's open-source firmware (Arduino/Teensy/Pi Pico + a browser tuning UI). DDRPad sells a plug-and-go kit (~$60). Cheap, reversible, turns a 20-year-old pad into a modern tunable one.

The DIY ladder — cheapest to full cab

1

FSR-mod a pad you own

teejusb kit / DIY FSRs + a Pro Micro → analog, software-tunable. The most common starting move.

$25–60
2

FSR mini / travel pad

Small dedicated FSR pad, Teensy/Pico + web UI.

$80–200
3

Buy a hard pad

L-TEK (EU), Precision/Omega (US) — well-regarded ready-mades.

$300–700
4

Build a RE:Flex

Open-source, load-cell, 1000 Hz, 84 LEDs/panel. Gold standard if you build. Sourcing parts is the hard part.

$300–600+
5

Full custom cab

Pad + steel-pipe bar + big monitor + a $50 used OptiPlex + ITGmania. See the Platform & Bar guide.

$600–2,500
